This Privacy Policy explains how Wandering Library LLC ("Wandering Library", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you use the Wandering Library mobile application and this website.

The Wandering Library application is designed to process location data locally on your device. We do not require you to create an account, and we do not utilize third-party analytics, build user profiles, or sell user data.

This policy governs the app as currently deployed. If our data practices materially change, this policy will be updated accordingly.

1. Our Commitments

The following commitments govern our handling of user information and apply throughout this policy.

• 1.1. We will provide notice before we collect, maintain, use, or share personally identifiable information ("PII"), and will obtain consent where required by applicable law.
• 1.2. We do not sell PII. No request or opt-out is required to secure this protection.
• 1.3. We do not use or disclose PII for third-party advertising, and we do not sell advertising space within the application.
• 1.4. We collect only the data necessary to deliver the service, and we maintain safeguards reasonably designed to protect the confidentiality and integrity of the limited information we process.

2. Data Controller

Wandering Library LLC is a limited liability company registered in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, United States. We serve as the data controller for the information described in this policy.

3. Principles of Processing

3.1. Data minimization

We collect only the data necessary to make the application available to you and to maintain the reasonable security and operation of our services. The application is architected so that the information generated by your use of it — your position, the passages you collect, and the notes you write — remains on your device and is not transmitted to us.

3.2. Purpose limitation

We use the limited data described in this policy only to operate, secure, and maintain the service, to distribute Edition content, and to respond to correspondence you initiate. We do not use it for profiling, advertising, or any purpose incompatible with those stated here.

4. Information We Do Not Collect

We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, physical address, contacts, photos, camera roll, microphone access, calendar, health data, or advertising identifiers. We do not use third-party analytics or attribution software. We do not fingerprint your device or use cookies for user tracking. We do not build user profiles or track users across third-party applications or websites. We do not participate in advertising networks.

5. Location Data

The application requires location data to function, but this determination is made entirely locally on your device. The coordinates for an Edition's passages are downloaded in advance, and your device compares your position against them locally.

• 5.1. Coordinates are not transmitted to Wandering Library. We do not hold, process, or have access to your location history.
• 5.2. We do not sell, rent, or share location data with advertisers, data brokers, or any third party.
• 5.3. With your explicit permission, the app processes location data in the background to provide arrival notifications. This comparison and notification generation occurs strictly on your device. We do not utilize push notifications from our servers for this feature.
• 5.4. You may decline or withdraw location permissions at any time via your device's system settings. Without location permissions, arrival-based unlocking and notifications will not function.

6. Third-Party Map Services

The application utilizes map tiles fetched over the network from OpenFreeMap, an open-source tile service. The lettering and visual textures on the map are fetched from our own content delivery network.

When the map is utilized within the app, your device requests the necessary map tiles directly from OpenFreeMap. The operator serving these tiles receives your IP address alongside those requests. As with any standard map application, approximate location can be inferred from these requests by the third-party provider. Wandering Library does not store this information or associate it with your device or usage.

Browsing an Edition's passages without opening the map interface does not initiate these network requests.

7. Local Storage (Portfolio and Notes)

Passages you collect, notes you write, and routes you record are stored in your Portfolio within the app.

The Portfolio is stored exclusively on your device. It is not uploaded, backed up, or synchronised to our servers. Deleting the application will permanently delete your Portfolio and all associated data.

Your notes remain on your device. They are not shared, published, or accessible to Wandering Library or other users.

User-generated content. Any field in which text may be entered, including notes and any name you assign to a walk or collection, may contain information you supply. Because this content is retained solely on your device and is never transmitted to us, we do not receive it in any form.

8. User Accounts

Wandering Library does not utilize user accounts. The app does not request or store an email address, password, username, or profile data.

9. Analytics and Advertising

The application does not incorporate third-party analytics software development kits (SDKs), advertising identifiers, tracking pixels, crash-reporting services, or cross-app tracking mechanisms. We serve no advertising.

10. Artificial Intelligence

Automated and machine-learning tools are used in the preparation of Edition content — for example, to propose the geographic siting of a historical passage — prior to editorial review. This processing is applied to source material in the public domain or under open licence.

The application contains no generative artificial intelligence features. No user data, Portfolio content, notes, or location information is transmitted to any artificial intelligence provider, and no such provider receives information about you or your use of the application.

11. Website Data Collection

This website is served through a content delivery network (CDN), which processes standard server request logs—including IP addresses and user agents—for security and delivery optimization purposes. We do not utilize analytics or advertising trackers on this site, and it sets no tracking cookies.

The website utilizes typefaces loaded from Google Fonts. Consequently, Google receives your IP address when accessing this site.

We engage the following third-party infrastructure providers to operate our services. These providers are authorized to process data strictly on our instructions and are prohibited from using it for independent purposes:

14. User Rights and Choices

You maintain control over your data in the following ways directly through your device:

• 14.1. Location and notification permissions: Managed via your device's system settings.
• 14.2. Data deletion: Uninstalling the application permanently deletes your Portfolio, notes, and route data from your device. Because this data is never transmitted to us, no request to us is required, and we are not able to perform the deletion on your behalf.

Residents of certain jurisdictions, including US states with applicable privacy laws, the European Economic Area (EEA), and the United Kingdom, may have formal rights to access, correct, export, or delete personal information. To exercise any applicable legal rights, contact support@wanderinglibrary.app. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.

Please note that because we do not maintain user accounts or transmit your Portfolio to our servers, we generally do not possess identifiable user data to access, export, or delete on your behalf. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

15. Children's Privacy

Wandering Library is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected such data, we will take reasonable steps to delete it. Note that the application presents historical primary documents which may contain mature themes including violence and slavery.

We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect the limited information we process. Our security practices include the following:

• 16.1. Edition content, application updates, and this website are transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS).
• 16.2. The application is designed so that location data, Portfolio contents, and notes are not transmitted to our servers, materially limiting the information exposed to any compromise of our infrastructure.
• 16.3. We maintain no user credentials, authentication secrets, or payment information, as the service does not use accounts and does not process payments directly.
• 16.4. Administrative access to our infrastructure is restricted to personnel who require it to operate the service.

No system or network is entirely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

17. Business Transfers

In the event that Wandering Library LLC is involved in a merger, acquisition, sale of assets, or bankruptcy, any transferred user information would remain subject to the terms of the applicable Privacy Policy. Data stored exclusively on your local device is not transferred to a successor entity in such an event.

18. Limitations on Data Access

Due to the application's local-processing architecture, Wandering Library cannot:

• Produce a route, visit history, or location profile for any user.
• Access or read your Portfolio or notes.
• Identify individual users or share visit histories with third parties.
• Recover or restore your Portfolio if your device is lost, wiped, or the app is uninstalled.

19. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy on this site and revising the effective date.

20. Applicability

By using the Wandering Library application or this website, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy. This policy operates alongside our Terms of Service; where the two address the same subject, this policy controls with respect to the handling of personal information.

Where any translation of this document is provided, it is offered in good faith to broaden access. In the event a translation introduces inconsistency or divergence in meaning, the English-language version controls.
